A graduate quantity surveyor job checklist

Questions that help you judge the support and experience behind an entry-level vacancy.

Find out who will support you

Ask who will review your work, how often you will meet and how questions are handled when deadlines are close. Request examples of the work a new starter takes on during the first few months. Structured feedback matters as much as the size of the employer.

Ask for concrete development commitments

If an advert mentions professional development or APC support, ask what that means in practice: supervision, relevant project exposure, study time, fees and a named contact. Check current qualification requirements directly with the professional body rather than assuming every graduate programme follows the same route.

Prepare evidence from your experience

Use a project, placement or course assignment to explain how you approached a measurement, cost comparison, procurement task or problem. Describe your own contribution and what you learned. Remove confidential client or project information from examples you share.

Make the search manageable

Filter by level, location and travel range, then check the actual responsibilities. Keep a record of applications and save useful listings. Use email alerts for the combination you want, and confirm your subscription so the alerts can start.
